Non-Contact Conveyor Weight Measurement Without Wear

Measure solids on belt, screw and other conveyors without load cells, conveyor modifications, or contact components exposed to vibration, material impact, and continuous wear.

THE MEASUREMENT CHALLENGE

Conventional conveyor scales can be vulnerable to wear and vibration

Mechanical conveyor scales and load-cell systems can be affected by vibration, material impact, misalignment, buildup, and changing belt conditions. Installation of a weight measurement system often requires costly conveyor modifications, added supports, and downtime. And ongoing maintenance and recalibration of these process systems can disrupt production, adding more downtime.

THE RONAN APPROACH

Measure material weight without contacting the conveyor

Ronan radiometric weighing systems mount a source holder and detector on a compact frame around the conveyor. As material passes through the beam, it attenuates the energy reaching the detector. The microprocessor converts that signal into weight, rate, totalized material, and other selected outputs, without contacting the belt or product.

HOW IT WORKS

Three coordinated components measure material on the moving conveyor.

A source holder and detector are mounted on a frame that goes around, but doesn’t come into contact with, the conveyor. As material passes through the measurement path, the energy reaching the detector changes. The microprocessor converts that change into a continuous weight, rate, or totalized-material reading.

STEP 1

The measurement frame mounts around the conveyor.

The lightweight system can be bolted around a belt or screw conveyor without major conveyor modifications.

STEP 2

The detector measures material load.

As material passes through the beam, changes in attenuation correspond to the amount of material on the conveyor.

STEP 3

The microprocessor reports weight and rate.

The X96 system provides selected outputs such as weight, rate, speed, totalizer, batching, and control signals.

The weight measurement system is engineered around the conveyor and measurement requirements

Ronan evaluates conveyor type, belt or screw geometry, material characteristics, throughput range, available mounting space, and required outputs to configure the measurement frame and electronics.

What determines the weight measurement configuration:

  • Conveyor type, width, geometry, and available mounting location
  • Material bulk density, particle size, and expected load range
  • Required rate, totalizer, batching, and control outputs
  • Belt speed information, vibration, buildup, and environmental conditions

The benefit of a non-contact weight measurement system

The non-contact measurement frame mounts around belt, screw, drag, and other conveyor types without conveyor modifications or a production shutdown for installation. Because nothing contacts the belt or material at the measurement point, the system avoids the wear, damage, and maintenance issues caused by heavy vibration, abrasive material, impact, and buildup that can affect mechanical scales and load-cell systems.

Common weight measurement applications

  • Belt and screw conveyors
  • Batching and blending operations
  • Bulk-material transfer and loading
  • Material handling where space is limited
