Accurate Mass Flow Measurement for Variable-Density Processes

Combine external radiometric, or nuclear, density measurement with volumetric flow data to calculate mass flow without intrusive density instruments, bypass lines, or wetted measurement components.

THE MEASUREMENT CHALLENGE

Volumetric flow alone does not show true mass throughput

When density changes, the same volumetric flow rate can represent very different amounts of material. This is common in slurries, dredging, chemical processing, and other variable-solids applications. Intrusive density instruments can be exposed to abrasion, corrosion, buildup, and difficult operating conditions.

THE RONAN APPROACH

Combine density and flow for a complete mass-flow measurement

Ronan mass flow systems use an external radiometric density gauge together with a volumetric flowmeter, such as a magnetic flowmeter. The density gauge measures the process through the pipe wall while the flowmeter provides volumetric flow. The Ronan microprocessor combines those inputs to calculate and display mass flow in the units that matter to the operation.

HOW IT WORKS

Three coordinated elements calculate real-time mass flow.

A source holder and detector are mounted externally on the process pipe, measuring density without contacting the material. As density changes, the energy reaching the detector changes. The microprocessor combines that density measurement with volumetric flow data to calculate continuous mass-flow rate and totalized mass.

The Mass Flow Measurement System Is Engineered Around the Process and Measurement Requirements

Ronan evaluates pipe geometry, density range, volumetric flowmeter signal, operating conditions, required accuracy, and reporting requirements to configure the complete mass-flow system.

What determines the weight measurement configuration:

  • Pipe diameter, wall thickness, liners, and installation access
  • Expected density range, solids content, and process variation
  • Volumetric flowmeter type, signal, and integration requirements
  • Temperature, pressure, flow conditions, buildup, entrained gas, and required response time

Why density matters for mass flow

By combining density and volumetric flow, the system provides the information needed to manage actual material throughput rather than relying on volume alone.

Common mass flow measurement applications

  • Dredging and slurry transport
  • Mining process streams
  • Chemical and petrochemical transfer lines
  • Pulp and paper process streams
